Having delivered Liz to Birmingham International Airport on Monday 9th June for a week in Cyprus and having tackle all ready to go on Tuesday 10th June…
I headed off, again at 0530, to Kingsbury Water Park to fish another of the available waters there – this time Mill Pool arriving at around 0620 – and via a different route due to using a different Sat Nav. My original, a Garmin Nuvi 2517LM, had starting suffering problems refusing to connect to the PC which meant maps couldn’t be updated etc and data was unable to be backed up. So, I bought a used 2517LM from eBay for £12 and also a more up to date but used Drive 52 for £55 at Liz’s suggestion. So the old Nuvi is now stuffed in a drawer in the hope I’ll find a ‘fix’ – the new Nuvi is setup and kept as a spare – and the Drive 52 is now the everyday use one. Anyway, its directions to KWP, differed, as I said, to the previous visit where the Nuvi did its last job. Actually I think the new route was about 10 minutes shorter :)

So, I arrived onsite and drove round to the pool…
Parking was on the grass verge by the peg which was very handy ….. AND I’d also sorted out all of the problems I’d encountered on my last outing by ensuring I had packed all needed items and that they were working OK!
First thing was to cast out the Deeper sonar to establish the depths, etc…… and noted no fish life was detected.

Depths up to 7ft.
Next, the usual feed mix was spombed out …. about 8 medium sized spombs…
Then the usual setting up of the tackle and ancillaries followed…
And actual fishing commenced at around 0815 with 2 x 1.75lb TC rods, 8lb main lines+6” 8lb braid hook lengths, size 8 hooks, frame feeders loaded with feed mix. One rod baited with double dendro worm, the other with jelly bread later changed to sweetcorn.
I also, when into the session, cast out my WaterWolf camera for several hours… and when inspected not much showed up in the way of fish life – possibly just a few minnow sized things. Mind you, the camera angle wasn’t good with about a 45’ degree angle downwards about 3’ from the bottom giving a very limited range despite the water being crystal clear. 3’ deep not a bad height but need to sort the camera to sit on a more horizontal line possibly. Something to tat about with methinks.
SO … from the sonar and video data I think you will have already have guessed the result!
Almost not a touch – bar a single slow bobbin lift of about 12” which then fell back – a dropped take? A line bite?
I packed up at 1430 and headed home ….
PLANS
So, Wednesday was spent going through baits and tackle to check all good for a planned trip back to KWP on Friday, this time planning to go to Gibson’s Pool or Cliff Pool South.
One thing I discovered was that my particle mix was ‘WRONK!’ Maybe why the lack of fish? So a lot of time was spent making a new mix up for the outing to come – this time unlike usually when I’ve made up a big (5 litre?) batch I’ve made just enough to cover one outing, perhaps two depending on how much is needed. Only takes 30 minutes to cook up barley, wheat, hemp together – and coloured rice (yellow and red) done separately but simultaneously. This time I’ve added fennel seeds to the barley, etc batch – very ‘aniseedy’ which bream are supposedly attracted by. I’ve used fennel itself in the past to make ‘aniseed water’ to use to cook seeds in and mix into groundbait BUT the seeds which I thought would be quite bland are actually very strong in smell when boiled! So let’s see what that brings! :)
Liz is back home on Tuesday 17th – actually flight sets off on Monday 16th but lands 0200-0300 on Tuesday – so that upsets any idea of fishing the opening day. So planning fishing on Thursday 19th on the KWP stretch of the River Tame.
