Session 13 – Unlucky For Some? Not This Fella!

Tuesday, June 20th, 0600, I was off again to the club’s tench and bream water (AA-B) in the hope of encountering some slimey’s…

As usual I was first on the scene at 0630 but not by a long spell … only by about 30 minutes it seemed and possibly less!

I chose to fish one of my favourite swims on the far bank and on reaching my peg I mixed up about 2Kg of my usual dry mix to which I added the usual particles inc dead maggots … plus my hemp infused oil and a good dollop of raw molasses (a great bream attractor) … and put 80%+ of that directly into my swim to start its workings whilst I set up stall, tackled up, sorted nets and scales, etc.

Tackle … my usual and ever faithful 13’ Hardy Matchmaker float rod, 6lb main line, 6lb braid hook length with size 12 barbless hook all fished ‘lift method’ style under a 2.5SSG rated Drennan driftbeater float. Baits used were worm and maggots … I had intended to try cheese paste but never got round to it as its always on my mind that none ‘meaty’ baits are instantly dismissing the capture of perch and thus only if I’m getting a lot of bites do I tend to go ‘vegetarian’ as it were.

Whilst fishing I, of course, free fed maggots over the session and fed the remaining groundbait mix over the last couple of hours or so,

So fishing from around 0720 to 1400 (I needed to collect Liz from work or I’d have stayed on) I was having attention almost every cast with minor wobbles, dips and lifts but was unable to connect – those bites probably being due to small silvers grabbing the tails of the worms I was using .. but even when switching to maggot things didn’t greatly improve … probably small silvers again that found the SSG anchor shot too heavy for them … and it was around 1230 that I had my first proper take resulting in my first proper fish since I don’t know when! J A bream of 4lb 6oz… and it wasn’t too much longer that I had another of 4lb 1oz… but then it was almost time to tackle down and head off home to unload, shower and change ready to meet Liz….

So, a very pleasant days fishing all-in-all…

PLANS

Liz and I are off camping 1st-8th July near to St Asaph– and its a fishing free holiday albeit that the buckets and crab lines for the few hours of the traditional “Steve vs Liz Crabbing Championship” takes place at Marine Lake, Rhyl are being taken. Whilst there I’m also hoping to have a look at Rhyl’s Harbour and Splash Point to check out for possible sea fishing opportunities if we return there at another time – sea fishing is easier tackle wise, basically just needs our sea rod/reels (and homemade drop net if pier fishing), all other tackle and bait – for us both – fits into my old original Shakespeare seat box.

So normal fishing will be resumed sometime on, or shortly after, Thursday 11th July….

  1. A proper fishy-looking swim that, and congrats on the couple of good looking Bream (slight oxymoron 😁). Keep it up 👍
