Home From The Sea….

Arrived home yesterday (Saturday May 2nd) from a camping holiday on the Gower on which Liz and I had hoped to have a day’s sea fishing – originally planning to fish off Porthcawl Pier – but events of the week saw us not even wetting a line…

The hoped for day at Porthcawl – planned for Wednesday 27th April – was cancelled after high winds and torrential rain overnight preceding and so we just went into Porthcawl town and then on to Bridgend town for the day touring the charity shops – our ‘other’ main hobby! – me, in search of angling related mugs/bric-a-brac/DVDs/books and Liz in search of material for her sewing and clothes and we were both successful in our searches with Liz garnering dresses and material and myself 2 DVDs and 4 books :). Anyway, as it happened the day turned out better weatherwise than it started out and there were a few out there fishing the pier.

So our fishing plans changed for an intended day on Mumbles Pier on Thursday… but we arrived at the car park … paid £5 for all day parking … walked up to the pier … and found it was closed due to essential works, as part of the £2m restoration its receiving, in progress! So after a bit of ‘umming and arring’ we went into the pierside café for hot drinks – for which £2 of the parking fee could be used – and decided we’d drive back to Port Einon (just beyond Horton where we were actually camping) and have a look at the beach there with a view to doing a bit of beachcasting – but we were again thwarted due to the tide having only turned back from low water a couple of hours previously and due to the water depth it would need another couple of hours to reach being a viable proposition. So we called the plans off and headed back to the tent for coffee and book reading until evening meal time followed by the campsite’s club house and beer.

So now we’re back home – and I’m intending to visit the tench/silvers pool of our club on Tuesday 5th May – using new tactics for the water, some new baits in a swim I’ve only fished once previously but looks good… Did OK last time I fished there IIRC … albeit I lost a few fish and snagged/snapped a few times on an old sunken rope BUT after that session I did go out in the boat kept at the pool and clear the snag out completely – and fell in whilst trying to get back out of the boat afterwards!! LOL!
