Monday 13th May, back at the Mike Day Fishery with Liz…
Well, at least the dreaded phlegm lurgy I’d been suffering had improved – not 100% and still a bit sniffy at times but well enough to feel better…
Leaving the house at 0700 we arrived at the pool around 0740 to find other there already there – but as the car was parked on the car park we suspected he had setup on the far side of the pool – and found this to be true when we drove past to park at the ‘picnic area’ (so named as there used to be a pub-type table with attached benches either side and an old barrel type BBQ – but both these are no longer there) which has room for 4 cars to park up. As it happened there were only four of us on the pool all day – myself and Liz, the other chap who was there when we arrived – and unseen by me until we were leaving, another who had positioned themselves on the far bank but not as far up as us.

As usual, on arrival I fed the swim well before doing anything else feeding with catapulted particles (dead maggot, stewed wheat, barley, hemp, etc) – no cereal – and possibly overfed but as it seemed from the results seen of others, it probably didn’t make much difference.
One thing too, the previous day there had been a club match on this water which had resulted in low weights (11-08 winning, 5-07 2nd and 2-14 3rd) … and this on a water where just 3 tench would have easily made, and most times exceeded, that winning weight. So plenty of excuses ready for the not so good session LOL!
I had considered float fishing – lift method to start with – but instead I decided to go with legered worm (8lb main line, 8lb 4” braid hook length, size 8 hook) as I had been doing on previous sessions.
Result – a few lifts of the bobbin/bleeps of the alarm but nothing I could connect with over the whole day. Liz fared a little better with one perch of around 2oz taken on maggot in conjunction with a frame feeder loaded with cereal/seed/maggot but even that was a ‘fluke’ (IMHO) with the bait having been taken on the drop….
Anyway, I had a little wander towards the end of the day to check out the pool further up and found…
- A mass of 2”-3” fry around the top end of the pool – bodes good for the future!
- However, the predominant breeze had collected all the willow and dandelion fluff along with free floating lily pads and other detached leaves up that end and it would have been extremely difficult to get a line out.
- A couple of pegs along from my position, one of which had been a favourite, looked very promising so…
PLANS
As I said there were a couple of interesting pegs up from where I’d been this session … one of which looked great for legering across to an overhanging tree which was not accessible from the pegs on that bank … the other was my old favourite facing towards the end of the pool’s small island and is (or at least was) a good float fishing peg with fish travelling in the channel between island and mainland.
Also I think I need to change my usual feeding style to alternating hourly light feeding of cereal-with-particles and a 5-10 minute catapult load of dead/live maggot…
Anyway, next planned outing is on Monday 20th May… so we’ll see :)
