Session 05 – Not The Best Of Days…

Went on Monday 28th April to the usual tench/bream pool … but health – a heady/sinus thing spoilt the day.
Best I can do is copy the relevant part of an email I sent to my buddy the following day…

“Not a good day … for me anyway … far too hot!
Plus I had a bad phlegmy cough Sat pm – at times having coughing bouts that lasted 10-15 seconds without time to take a breath in!! Overnight I didn’t think I’d go but at 0400 started to feel better and went at 0500…

Fished from about 0645 … one other arrived just in front of me so I got to pass through gate and lock it behind me. 2 others already there … and 4 more arrived during the day! This on a pool when 95% of time I’m first there at 0715 … and quite often noone else all day, and if 2 others do arrive then it’s equivalent to January sales!!

Started float fishing … lift method per usual. A few nudges but probably small perch sucking the worm’s tail. But I miscast about 1130 into overhanging tree… bust, got float back but whiplash tangled end rig too badly to resolve so got my leger rod out. Second cast – 2-01 bream. A fair few decent takes followed but no connections.. and then…

Thought I’d fish to about 1400-1430 but sun came round trees at about 1330 … and too hot! Can’t tolerate heat, no oxygen in the air it feels to me… and coughing fits returned so breathing in no O2 and then emptying lungs of what little I’d taken in… big task it was tackling down and barrowing kit to car (60 yards?) … didn’t feel well at all! Stopped off halfway home at the Co-op in Codsall to get a Cornetto to cool down!! Got home and Liz helped unload and we just dumped all in the front room.

Had a cool shower (although it seems there’s a problem with the mixer tap and couldn’t turn down <37°C) and then lay on bed naked for a few hours until 2000 and then came down for a couple of hours… and then back to bed. Coughing fits overnight but seemed to ease a bit.

Up at 0800 today felt much better, had breakfast, put baits in fridge/freezer, etc and then sorted the float rod… but now (1400) sun is up, coughing and tickly throat is back and gear is still out back waiting for the day to cool before I go get it in… Want to make adjustments to my leger setup too but that’s for tomorrow now….”

Baits, worm … and I also tried raw chicken (not a touch) …

Yesterday unpacked the baits and put in fridge and  I did manage to retackle the float rod all early morning before the sun came up over the house but it was evening time before the sun went down enough to venture out again to bring the gear in to storage. Cough still coming and going and its very debilitating when it happens, throat a bit rough too. But generally managed to sleep through most of the night…

PLANS

Not sure yet, probably depends on how I recover from this bout of whatever it is!

  1. Hope you are feeling better soon Steve, although if even your bad days see you landing a fish that needs the net, then things aren’t that grim. I’m not that heat sensitive beyond I think sitting in strong Sun is a mug’s game – hence my love of fishing on Summer evenings – I realise that isn’t your MO, but I’d urge you to think about just going for the last two or three hours of daylight.

PS ‘Thanks’ for implanting an image in my head I’m struggling to shake off.

    1. Trouble though is that time to sort gear, load car, travel there, unload, get to swim, set up – untackle, back to car, load up, drive back, unload car, put baits in fridge/freezer, etc would be at least 2-3 times longer than time actually fishing?

      1. Horses for courses I guess and I was aware the suggestion doesn’t really fit your approach – it probably explains why I keep my tackle to the minimum and why I can get locked in to a pre-mediated approach (I rarely give myself time to do a complete U-turn bankside). Hopefully you’ll soon be back fighting fit, the Summer won’t be too hot and your Test Match approach will be viable again, leaving me to plough my T20 evening furrow. As to this evening’s T20, well I failed to take my chances.

        1. Feeling recovered now – well a fair bit anyway :)

House and garden taking up some time at mo – and have a review appointment with the diabetic nurse on Thursday – saw her 2 weeks ago and she was pleased with improvement so having to record some numbers and she’ll review/fine tune meds… and general gut probs seem improved too (and now that’s said its bound to be jinxed!).

Anyway, today is Bank Holiday so I keep clear of the waters then – and esp after last week’s visit when it seemed that ‘MY’ pool was to be the trendy place to be…

So with Thursday busy too, it’ll be next Monday for my next outing… :)

        2. Bought a baseball type cap now – with a veil down the back to keep the sun off my neck :)

          1. Good move – don’t tell the French though, becoming Beau Ridd of the Foreign Legion might be a bad move.

  2. Not really … a bug Liz had had for the previous week but in my case my Achilles Heel/Superman Kryptonite/Werewolf Silver Bullet is hot weather esp unshaded sunlight. Just drains me and every breathe seems to have depleted oxygen in it… couple that with the throaty phlegm thing making intake harder than usual and….. the result.

When being born my Mom had to pushed across the hospital courtyard through snow whilst snowing to the delivery room ensuring I’d always be a cold weather person I suppose… 👍😃

    Thanks for wishes…

Improved over the day now so hoping back to normal tomorrow 👍😃
