Session 5 (2024) – No Fish But No Stick In The Mud

Monday 26th February I set off out at 0900 again intending to fish the ‘tench/bream’ pool again although on arrival I actually elected to fish the carp pool that lies less than 10 yards away – a pool I’ve not fished for probably 10 years, at least properly as I might have stopped off there for an hour or so in passing after a quiet day on the ‘tench/bream’ pool.

I was the only one on site all day – and luckily, or should I say skilfully, I avoided the muddy and problematic bits of the track to and from the car park. With no chance of assistance and the pools way out in the sticks that was a necessity really!

The pool was created by the club back in 2009, I believe, on the land that contained the bream/tench pool when the club purchased and discovered that there was enough land to create this second pool. Originally it was intended to be a carp/chub only pool, the existing pool to be carp free but otherwise multi-species. Over the years though carp have been placed in the tench/bream pool (mainly on the suggestion of the EA that they would help with a cormorant problem in that pool) and silvers, etc have migrated into the carp pool, probably as fry passing through the grid across a connecting pipe … water flows in from a brook into the far end of the tench/bream pool, and then overflows into the carp pool via the pipe and then exits back into the brook at the other end of the carp pool. The chub seem to have disappeared from both pools though these days as have the crucian carp in the bream/tench one. Anyway, my hope was that a chub would turn up….

I fished one rod, an 11’ foot Des Taylor Avon System rod which, IIRC has a TC of 1lb, fished with the standard top section, not the interchangeable tip one, in conjunction with a bite alarm and bobbin for bite indication. Line used was 8lb Daiwa Hyper-Sensor through to a 6” braid hooklength and size 12 barbless Kamasan Animal hook … weighting was applied by a 1/4oz (7g) flat grip type weight on a short running link. Baits used were worm and worm and maggot cocktail (ie I added a couple of maggots to the worm later in the day LOL)…

Weather was relatively calm but very cool…

I fished until around 1430 … only two takes and both butt banging screamers but no connection could be made as fish were gone by the time I’d reacted and had only milliseconds to do so…

Blanked again…

Some holidays have been booked now – 3 visits to Haven’s Burnham-on-Sea holiday site for March (a visit on my own for 4 nights) and 2 visits in May and October (both 7 night visits accompanied by Liz). Use of their two fishing lakes are certainly on the agenda! :)
