Friday, September 8th, the third day of my ‘Liz away’ time, I decided to visit another of the club’s pools (AA-GH). This pool is predominantly carp inhabited but there are bream, silvers and more recently perch started to show but my greatest interest in this pool is pike… however, they were off the cards as the club operates a very strict Oct-March pike fishing season on all of its waters….
Again, an 0545 start from the house, with a 0625 arrival saw me as the first arrival on the water.
I had intended to, and did, choose a peg nestled within a bay of tall trees to provide shelter from the sun until midday.
This day was a ‘2 rods on the alarms on a pod’ day – with 2 ‘Barbel Avon’ 1.75lb TC rods, matched with 8lb lines, size 6 hooks and frame feeders… and before setting up I had my Deeper Chirp+ sonar out to do some mapping of the pool’s depths around the swim to add to data I’d already collected from another swim a few months back.
Feeders loaded with the usual mash of crumb, particles and maggot, hook baits were meat and bread.
First casts were made around 0815….
During the first half of the session I got one rod with a tangle around the lower end that involved the braid hooklength getting caught up in a knot of mono that I was not easily able to resolve and so I laid that rod aside to be sorted at home as I was getting a reasonable number of takes anyway and I lost what felt like a couple of good fish early on due to hook pulls…
About 1230 I somehow managed to catch on a tree behind as I cast out … snap and feeder flew flew out unattached and the rest of the terminal tackle lost too.
As the sun had now moved beyond the shade provided by my curtain of trees and it was getting too hot again I decided at that point that discretion is the greater part of valour and decided to call it a day … and I would have needed to pack in soon after anyway as I had to collect Liz back from her Burnham trip…
OH!!! Nearly forgot!!! I did actually catch!!
Two common carp of 4lb 8oz and 4lb 1oz made their way into my landing net!
